リトアニアの首都、ヴィルニアス郊外にある悪名高いジプシーのキャンプ。通称「テイバー」と呼ばれるその場所で見かけるのは、そこに住むジプシーか、クスリが欲しくてたまらない麻薬中毒者だけである。貧しさがジプシーたちを麻薬取引へ向かわせる。警察はこの状況を容認しているようだし、批判の声にあるように、昨今の権力者たちは、ジプシー麻薬中毒者もろとも街の中心部から排除されることをむしろ歓迎している。テイバーは一人で訪れるような場所ではない。くすんだ道路には酔った男がよろめき、注射器が散乱する。母親が気絶した麻薬中毒の息子に水をかけているかと思えば、ナイフで誰かが刺されている。私は隠れてこうした写真を撮ろうとする。しかしここの人々には、写真を撮られたくない理由があった。
私はアンドレという、足に深刻な感染を抱え寝たきりの麻薬中毒者に出会った。「俺たちは痛みを殺すためにそいつにヘロインをやったんだ。」彼の友人は言う。「医者はこいつを見放している。」友人は煙草の吸いすぎでぼうっとするあまり、玄関口に立ったまま眠りに落ちている。アンドレは写真に撮られることに同意し、薬を買うためのお金を要求してきた。私は彼が何か他のものにそのお金を使うだろうことはよくよくわかっていたが、財布を開いた。
外では他の麻薬中毒者が「いい考え」を持っていた。私がクスリの注射代を彼に渡せば、注射を打つところを写真に撮ってもいいと言うのだ。それはストーリーを構成するのにぜひとも欲しい写真であり、私にとっては魅力的な提案だった。だが、私にはできなかった。写真家はネガティブな方法でその場に介入してはならない。もっとほかに、より正直な形があるに違いないのだ。

In the outskirts of Vilnius lies a notorious gypsy camp, or “tabor”, where only two types of people dare to come: gypsies who live there, and desperate junkies dying for a shot. Poverty drove the gypsy community into drug dealing. The police seems to tolerate the situation and critics say the authorities are glad to be rid of both the junkies and gypsies, who used to deal in the city centre.
The tabor is no place to visit on your own. Wasted men stumble through the dusty roads, littered with syringes. A mother pours a bucket of water on a passed out junkie. Another one has just been stabbed by a knife. I try to photograph secretly. People here have a reason not to want to be photographed.
I meet André, a bed-ridden drug addict, who has severe infections in his legs. “We give him heroin to kill the pain”, says his friend. “Doctors gave up on him.” His friend is too stoned to smoke his cigarette and falls asleep while standing in the doorway. André agrees to be photographed. He asks me for money to buy medicine. Knowing very well the money will be used for something else, I open my purse.
Outside another junkie has an idea: If I pay him for a shot, he will let me photograph the injection. It’s an attractive proposal since I need this kind of picture to tell the story. But I can’t. A photographer should not intervene in events of risk in a negative way. There must be another, more honest way.

1974年生まれ。ベルギーのアントワープを拠点に活動するフリーの写真家。フリーランスとしてさまざまな新聞社や雑誌の仕事を経て、彼は自身の時間とエネルギーを、長期にわたる個人的なストーリーに費やすことを決意する。クルド人やバルカン諸国・ベルギーにおける難民についての政治・社会的レポートに取り組む。2009年、彼の最初の作品集となる、旧ソビエト連邦の社会的変遷をレポートした「Red Journey」でニコンフォトプレスアワードを受賞。現在は地中海沿岸に関する次回作の編集に取り掛かっている。ベルギーの写真家集団Nadaar設立メンバーの一人であり、ヘントの芸術専門学校ではドキュメンタリー写真の講義を受け持つ。
