私は何であれ、その人の心を打つものを写真に撮ることが重要だと思っている。それはたとえば美しい夕焼け、小さなピンクの花、あるいは自分のボーイフレンドであったりする。
我々はいつも好きなものを写真に撮るが、なぜ好きになったのかはあまり考えない。たしかに花はきれいだが、きれいとはどういうことだろうか。光に照らされたときの配色だろうか。少し左に傾いているさまだろうか。花びらが一枚散った皮肉さだろうか。
我々は魅力的な風景や被写体に出会うと思わず写真を撮るが、魅力的であるとは一体どういうことだろうか。時としてその答えは被写体の物理的な特徴によるものであったり、感情に訴える特質であったり、あるいは表象的なイメージによるものであったりする。
なぜ好きになったのかを自身で理解できれば、意図して写真を撮ることができる。
この写真はエネルギーを表す1枚だ。
私がある学校の外に立っていると、キックベースのボールがフェンスを越えて外に飛んできた。10人ほどの子ども達が不安げにフェンスに駆け寄り、ボールを返してほしそうにしていた。ボールは道路に転がり込み、車にひかれてしまうのだろうか。それとも誰かがボールを投げ返してくれるのだろうか。何通りかの筋書きが考えられた。しかし、私にはわかっていた。何が起ころうとも、子供達がとるであろう率直なリアクションは、私にとってなじみ深いものであろうことを。私は自分が小学5年生の頃を思い出していた。それは、人生を変えるような瞬間ではなく、どこにでもよくあるようなほんの一瞬のことだった。私はこの状況にあるエネルギーをありのままに写そうとした。
この写真は、ボールが返ってきてほしいと望んでいた私と私の友人たちのための1枚である。

I think it is important to photograph anything that strikes you. A beautiful sunset, a little pink flower, your boyfriend.
We always photograph what we like but we hardly ever process why we like it. Yes the flower is pretty, but what about it is pretty? is it the color combinations in the light, is it the way it slightly falls to the left? is it the irony in the single missing petal? We find ourselves photographing scenes and subjects that are attractive but what about that situation exactly is appealing? Sometimes the answer is a physical characteristic of the subject matter, sometimes its an emotional quality, other times its a symbolic notion.
If we are able to internalize why we like what we like, we can compose a frame with intention. This frame is about energy.
I was standing outside of a school when a kickball ball flew up and over the fence. A dozen anxious kids rushed to that fence and they all wanted the ball back. Will the ball roll into the street and be popped by a car? Will someone throw it back? There are a few different scenarios that could happen. I knew that no matter what happened, there was going to be an honest reaction that I was familiar with. I was going to be brought back to 5th grade. It wasn't going to be a life changing moment but it was going to be one of those classic fleeting ones. My intention was to capture the candid energy of the situation.
This shot is for me and all my friends who always hoped for the ball back.
