Further information about Intel's HD Graphics 3000 in other games can be read in our extensive graphics comparison. Fujitsu FMV-E8200 Battery

There is no reason for concern when it comes to Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES's temperatures. The ultrabook only heats up to a maximum of 35.1 on the top and 36.7 degrees Celsius on the bottom in load situations. Those are very good rates. Fujitsu FMV-E8210 Battery Sony could even consider throttling the fan speed a bit so to reduce the noise level slightly. The top's maximum temperature is 30.3 degrees Celsius and we measure 31.4 degrees Celsius on the bottom when the device is idling. So we can safely say that the ultrabook can be used without hesitation on the lap at all times. Particularly since an ultrabook will only rarely be used on the lap during full load.

However, we again point out that our test sample is a pre-series device. Consequently, the rates can look different in the retail version. Fujitsu FMV-E8300 Battery

We used the programs Prime95 and FurMark to put Sony's Vaio under the maximum possible load. Here, both the CPU and GPU are stressed extremely. We immediately noticed that the cooling system is at full power directly after starting the stress test. If we believe the data recorded using PC Wizard, the temperatures are not particularly high. We measured less than 50 degrees Celsius. The cooling system could have slowed down a notch or two. We also refer to the notebook's pre-series status here. Fujitsu FMV-E8310 Battery The cooling system's behavior may be revised in the retail version. The processor ran at maximum clock during the entire stress test. ULV processors do not incorporate Turbo Boost. We did not record throttling or similar problems and the subsequent 3DMark 06 benchmark did not show any big differences compared with the "cold" state with 3085.0 points.

The speakers are, notebook-typically, modest. They lack deep pitches and basses. The trebles start to fray in high volumes. However, the sound quality is acceptable for a movie on the go. The audio jack supplies a higher quality. Fujitsu LifeBook C1211 Battery

The ultrabook proves to be quite energy-efficient thanks to state-of-the-art energy saving technologies and hardware. It also has to be in order to achieve the run times Sony specifies. The idle consumption is 6.1 - 8.7 watts. When compared with other ultrabooks, the Sony fares quite well here. Apple's MacBook Air 13 (2557M, HD 3000) for example needs 6.0 - 14.0 watts. Sony's Vaio also does a fairly good job in load with 27.0 - 31.9 watts. Fujitsu LifeBook C1211D Battery

Sony's Vaio can excel again in battery life. We use BatteryEater Pro's software to determine the run times. The Reader's test simulates office use with reduced screen brightness and disabled wifi/Bluetooth. The ultrabook even manages more than the manufacturer's specified 7 hours and achieves a total of 8 hours and 26 minutes. The runtime sinks to 4 hours and 16 minutes when surfing on the Internet. 2 hours and 30 minutes are left when the ultrabook is used on the go with maximum brightness and full load. Fujitsu LifeBook C1212 Battery

Before we go on with our verdict, we again point out that the reviewed Sony Vaio SVT1311M1ES is a pre-series model. We are basically very satisfied with Sony's ultrabook as it is already.

The workmanship is very good. However, there was a minor deduction for the quite instable display; it can be twisted without much force. Since Apple and Asus prove that superior stability is possible, we deducted a few percentage points here. Fujitsu LifeBook C1212D Battery

After a bit of getting used to the keyboard, we also were very satis fied with it. The touchpad would have achieved an equally good rating if it were not for the sporadic dropouts. But we ascribe this to the pre-series status and presume that it will not occur in the final version. Fujitsu LifeBook E8010 Battery

In terms of connectivity, the notebook scores particularly due to available USB 3.0 as well as VGA and HDMI. Most other notebooks cannot keep up with that. However, the other notebooks break away in terms of performance since they usually feature stronger processors. In return, the good battery life makes up for that. Fujitsu LifeBook E8010D Battery

Overall, we can recommend Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES ultrabook without hesitation. Especially those looking for an enduring and well-built ultrabook for small money are well advised with Sony's laptop.

Acer promises timeless elegance and extraordinary computing power with its new Aspire V3 range. On Acer's product page, phrases like "use several applications at the same time", "search the Internet" and "playing computer games" are used in the same breath. Well, if that is not a masterpiece of engineering … Fujitsu LifeBook E8020 Battery

Now seriously, Acer aims the V3 at customers focused on performance and hesitantly tries to even bring its mobile products closer to the gaming enthusiastic audience. Until now, Acer does not have any full-blown gaming machines in its range. Thus, the V3 range will be a member of Acer's premium performance range. Fujitsu LifeBook E8020D Battery

Acer built to 15 inch models in the Ethos range (Aspire 5951G) and one 18 inch behemoth (Aspire 8951G) in the past. Consequently, a direct precursor can't really be determined for the present V3-771G featuring a 17.3 inch screen. It would soonest be the multimedia notebook Aspire 7750G, equipped with AMD's potent 6850G graphics. Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi2530 Battery

What does the Aspire V3-771G have inside? Well, as the known "G" in the model number already hints, a good portion of graphics power. In detail, Nvidia's GeForce GT 650M GPU works inside the notebook. It is a chip based on Nvidia's brand new Kepler architecture (28 nm), which is positioned in the upper midrange. Its performance can be compared with the older GTX 460M or GTX 560M. Amazingly enough they were members of the gaming upper range not even a year ago. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi2550 Battery

The GPU is backed by a processor from the also just released Intel Ivy Bridge generation. The i7-3610QM chip is virtually the gateway into the world of current mobile quad-core CPUs. Since the 17 inch case has enough room inside, Acer installs two 2.5 inch drive slots which are occupied by a 120 GB SSD as the system data carrier and a 1 TB data HDD in our test configuration. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi3540 Battery

Piano paint is retro – This first painful observation unfortunately characterizes the new Aspire V3's entire show. Display lid, screen bezel and the wrist rest gleam at the user – at least, for a while after the precious piece has left its packaging. It only takes a few hours of use until fingerprints and innumerous first-rate dust particles are visibly gathered. The surface's not very convincing sticky feel is also a known drawback. In the last few months it almost seemed that this kind of surface paint was finally going out of fashion – had Acer not taken its best shot at artfully disguising cheap plastic with painted surfaces just before the final farewell. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi2530 Battery

At least the looks are very nice in a polished state. The silver keyboard bezel peps up the otherwise completely black device. If it weren't for the lid's and wrist rest's glossy surfaces, the term "conservative" could apply to the device. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi2450 Battery

The plastic case's stability remains beyond reproach. No creaking noises or wobbly components are noticed when handling the device. The big 17 inch screen could be a bit more rigid. However that can be forgiven in view of the restricted portability. We find it much more annoying that the premium feel doesn't come up during use. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi2550 Battery

A look at the street prices explains the choice of the case. The Aspire V3 starts at incredible EUR 595. However, this version is still equipped with a Sandy Bridge CPU and GT 640M graphics. Nevertheless, there isn't much room for a higher quality case in view of this competitive price.

In our opinion, Acer's port solution is not satisfactory either. This does not apply as much to the scope of interfaces as to their distribution. All ports are located on the left and right side edges at the far front. This may be beneficial for accessing and locating the ports, but is less optimal for keeping the work area beside the notebook clear of obstructive and unsightly cables. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi2428 Battery

The variety and number of ports are alright but won't let anyone jump for joy. We find VGA, HDMI, LAN, 2x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0 as well as a headphone and microphone jack. The home user will be sufficiently equipped but an enthusiast will certainly find reason for complaint.

You get a lot of preinstalled software when you buy the notebook although it is actually unwanted – so-called bloatware. Some manufacturers please the buyer with an agreeably clean system and others clearly exaggerate by installing heaps of programs. Acer belongs to the latter even if it is not inevitably a direct disadvantage for the Aspire V3-771G. The solid state drive ensures that the system is swift right from the initial start. The notebook is booted and Windows is ready to go after mere 10 – 15 seconds. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi2528 Battery

However, you should consider that the system's SSD only has a capacity of 120 GB. The user only has approx. 100 GB available and around 70 GB of that is reserved by preinstalled software and system files. Therefore it is advisable to use the SSD primarily for frequently used software. Other data, such as music, videos and games, should sooner be stored on the 1000 GB data hard disk. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi2550 Battery

Maintenance

The user can access both hard disk slots, all four RAM banks, the wifi module and a free mSATA slot via a fairly large cover on the device's bottom. However, the CPU and GPU as well as the entire cooling system are not accessible. You risk voiding the warranty if you open the device beyond that. FUJITSU LifeBook T580 Tablet PC Battery

Warranty

The warranty specifications found in various shops cause confusion. Upon inquiry, Acer states a warranty period of 2 years (24 months) for all V3-771G configurations, including pick-up & return service. One year is an International Travelers Warranty. FUJITSU LifeBook T580 Battery

A chiclet-style keyboard is almost always used when looks matter – the present Acer Aspire V3 is no exception. However, that does not mean that it is not possible to type on such a pretty keyboard. We find a key size of 15 x 15 millimeters with a key gap of approximately 4 millimeters in the case of the Aspire V3. The function and arrow keys step out of line as they are smaller. In return, the user can take delight in a dedicated number pad. Additional keys are not used in favor of a plain design. The familiar functions, such as volume control, are managed via FN combinations. fujitsu fmv-biblo loox m-d10 Battery

The input does not give reason for complaint. Deviations are only seen on the ">/<" and "#/'" keys, which are placed directly beside their neighboring key (it is the two-rowed enter key in the latter case). Nevertheless, that should not lead to difficulties when typing after a bit of practice.

What is the typing feel like? Basically, all keys feature a clear pressure point with a medium key drop. The noise level is quiet up to very audible depending on the stroke. So if you belong to the more energetic typists, you can "enjoy" varying noises according to the area where you hit the key. fujitsu fmv-biblo loox m-d15 Battery

The installed multi-touchpad is slightly lowered in the case and can easily be located without looking. Its surface is made of the same material as the surroundings. However, it is slightly roughened which greatly contributes to the gliding characteristics. fujitsu lifebook m2010 Battery

We had a few, minor problems particularly in the first few minutes of familiarization: Tap-to-click was often not accepted and our fingers frequently strayed into the scroll field at the right edge. Alps' extensive configuration menu however allows many settings for customizing the touchpad to suit personal needs. After disabling the vertical scroll bar, two-finger based scrolling worked much better. fujitsu lifebook m2011 Battery

We would have definitely expected a Full HD screen in a strong 17 inch multimedia notebook or desktop replacement, especially in the full configuration we tested. This is unfortunately not the case. Acer completely relies on a HD+ screen with a maximum resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels. This is absolutely alright in terms of desktop overview for normal users, but the choice is disappointing in view of the BluRay option that could feed the screen with native 1080p content. Several competitors consistently use Full HD screens in the same price range. Examples would be Asus' N75SF or the upcoming Asus N76 just like the members of HP's Pavilion dv7 range. Fujitsu Stylistic LT C500 Battery

The aggressive pricing policy is ultimately also noticed in the installed screen's rates. The AUO139E screen has a maximum brightness of 230 cd/m2 in our measurements. That drops to an average of 213 cd/m2. Together with a comparatively high black value of 1.26 cd/m2, the maximum possible contrast of 171:1 is not exactly exemplary. Fujitsu Stylistic LT P600 Battery

Okay for the low-end price range of far below EUR 1000 also applies to the image quality. However, the big-spender should be able to expect a bit more in the configurations beyond this threshold. Then, not only more should be included in terms of gigabytes and MHz, but the screen could also be more attractive. Fujitsu Stylistic LT C-500 Battery

The G75 corrects many of the G74's shortcomings. Asus hasn't fixed everything (like the middling connectivity), but three video interfaces and four USB 3.0 ports compensate somewhat for the lack of eSATA and Firewire. Dell Studio 15 Battery

The modified case seems more compact and the silver keyboard base contrasts nicely with the rubber surfaces of the laptop. The fan is somewhat accessible now but the maintenance possibilities are nowhere near those of Clevo and MSI models. Dell Inspiron 1210 Battery

The G75 has also inherited the strengths of the series. For example, it's relatively quiet. In contrast to many competitors, the G75 does not become too loud or too hot under load. The generous touchpad and lighted keyboard make the laptop even more attractive. Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Battery

We also get great hardware and great performance: 16 GB DDR3 RAM, a Blu Ray burner, a Solid State Drive, a quad-core Ivy Bridge CPU, and a high-end graphics card - this model is a dream for gamers and entertainment fans. Dell Inspiron 910 Battery

Thankfully, Asus has not neglected picture quality. The matte panel supports 120 Hz and outperforms the competition: high brightness, great contrast, and satisfying colors. In addition, thanks to the 120 Hz support and Nvidia's 3D Vision technology, the display provides an intense game experience (Be careful: in 3D mode, frame rates drop by roughly half). Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Battery

The ultrabook market is currently experiencing a run. Virtually every reputable notebook manufacturer has introduced at least one model in the past months. In contrast to notebooks, which are also designed to cover the mobile sector, ultrabooks feature a much higher computing power and have a much higher build quality. Sony now also presents an ultrabook with a 13.3 inch screen with the Vaio SVT1311M1ES. The ultrabook is made completely of aluminum. However, not only its looks are to excel, but also its inner values. A new Intel Core i3 processor in ULV version as well as a hybrid hard disk is to ensure that. The ultrabook's weight of 1.6 kilograms is also impressive. We will see how Sony's ultrabook fares in our tests. Dell Inspiron Mini 9n Battery

We would like to add that our test sample of Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES is a pre-series model. There may be differences in the upcoming retail versions' configurations and therefore our measurements should only be taken with reservation. Dell Vostro A90 Battery

Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES looks make an excellent first impression. The surfaces of (partly brushed) aluminum look very high-end and elegant. The feel also conveys this impression. Moreover, the aluminum case fits well to the ultrabook's design and can be best described with the word "elegant". Dell Vostro A90n Battery

The notebook's low build height underlines this even more. The screen can be opened comfortably using one hand and without the base unit lifting at the same time. You will notice how little weight the delicate display has when opening it. This however also has an impact on the screen's stability. The slightest pressure is enough to let the display warp. It seems that a few components in the display bezel exert pressure against the screen. We noticed a few marks here. Dell Vostro 1710 Battery

The ultrabook's screen is also slightly elevated at the rear. Two small plastic feet serve as a tray for the ultrabook and the device's rear hovers in the air. This is to make typing more comfortable and improve the ultrabook's cooling. The user sees more aluminum when the device is opened. Our pressure tests show that the base unit is more rigid than the display. The wrist rest hardly yields under pressure and the frame around the keyboard is also very solid. The surface can only be depressed slightly in the keyboard's center. That is however still within acceptable limits and not noticed when typing. Dell Vostro 1720 Battery

Overall, the ultrabook's workmanship does not give reason for complaint. The aluminum case and good build let the user know that he is dealing with a high-end device. However, the screen should be treated with care because it is not exactly the stiffest due to its low thickness. Dell Vostro 1310 Battery

Ultrabooks usually do not score with their interface diversity and the Sony Vaio SVT1311M1ES is a small exception here. The user has to be satisfied with two USB ports, whereas one is a faster USB 3.0. Besides the power socket, that is all there is on the left. The other ports are on the right. In contrast to many other ultrabooks, there are two sockets for video signals - the one is an analog VGA out and the other a HDMI port. A network jack and a 2in1 card reader are also available. Thus, Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES's equipment is not bad for an ultrabook. The interfaces are limited to the laptop's sides. Therefore, you should take care when using big USB sticks or thicker plugs since they could lift the ultrabook here due to its low height. Dell Vostro 1320 Battery

Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES actually offers (almost) all communication options that you might want in a mobile device. Everything your heart desires is present, except for a UMTS modem. A network card from Realtek is available for cabled Internet access. It supports 1000BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 10BASE-T speeds. An Atheros card is installed for wireless connections. It covers IEEE 802.11 b/g/n standards as well as Bluetooth version 4.0. Dell Vostro 1510 Battery

To access the ultrabook's hardware, you first have to remove the battery fastened with three screws. However, they are not the usual Phillips screws, but a special form. For example, the battery can be removed by simply using a coin. The battery is not built-in, like in many other ultrabooks and can be easily removed. The hardware is found underneath another cover. Dell Vostro 1520 Battery

A keyboard model with free-standing keys is used in Sony's ultrabook. The keys are not particularly big with a size of 14 x 13 millimeters. The gap between the keys is approximately 4 millimeters. Users with big hands could have problems and unintentionally hit two keys at the same time. Therefore, it is definitely advisable to try out the keyboard before buying the laptop. Dell Vostro 2510 Battery

When typing on the keyboard for the first time, you will immediately notice that the keys are very flat and hardly jut out of the base unit. That alongside the hard stop and short key drop can be irritating at first. It also seems like the keys do not provide enough feedback. After a while, you get used to it and you can type comfortably on the keyboard. In addition to the usual FN keys, marked in blue, Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES has three buttons above the keyboard. They are named "ASSIST", "WEB" and "VAIO". Software VAIO Care opens after pressing the "ASSIST" button. It lets you monitor your notebooks status. The key "WEB" opens the browser and the key "VAIO" either opens Media Gallery or PlayMemories Home software. Dell Studio 1435 Battery

Touchpad

The touchpad in Sony's SVT1311M1ES is pretty wide but not very high. This again becomes obvious when looking at the touchpad's dimensions of 100 millimeters (width) x 56 millimeters (height) and a diagonal of 112 millimeters. No mouse keys are seen at first glance. Like Apple notebooks, the touchpad itself is the key and can be pressed at both lower edges. A clear click noise confirms triggering. This feature worked perfectly in the test. We were a bit unhappy with the touchpad's functions though. The touchpad often responded very sluggishly or jerkily. That gets very annoying and bothersome during use and does not really fit to a quality device like Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES. We however assume that the occasional jerks are due to the pre-series status and will be eliminated in the retail version. Multi-touch of course belongs to the touchpad's scope of functions. However, it also exhibits occasional jerks as in normal use. Dell Studio 1436 Battery

Sony builds a 13.3 inch screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels into the Vaio SVT1311M1ES. The screen is equipped with a backlight and glare-type surface. The screen looks a lot smaller than 13.3 inches at first because it is enclosed by a pretty thick frame. We would have welcomed a somewhat thinner bezel and perhaps a bigger screen in return. As described in connectivity, there is a VGA out and HDMI port available to feed external monitors. The maximum resolution for external devices is 1920 x 1200 pixels. Dell Inspiron 1410 Battery

Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES is not a high-flyer in brightness rates, but compared with other ultrabooks it looks quite poor. For example, Asus' Zenbook UX21E is clearly beyond 400 cd/m2 and the MacBook Air's rates are over 200 cd/m2. Sony's Vaio average of 167.8 cd/m2 looks rather weak in contrast to that. The illumination of 88 percent is quite homogeneous though. The brightness is maintained on battery power. Unfortunately, the black value of 1.26 cd/m2 is rather high. A rate less than 1.0 cd/m2 should be aimed at in screens. The user not only benefits from that in dark movie or game scenes, but the contrast is also improved. The contrast is only poor 139:1 in this case. Dell Vostro 1014 Battery

Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES is rather middling in terms of color reproduction. Both the sRGB and AdobeRGB color space are remote from being completely rendered. However, that is not really a problem for Sony's ultrabook because it will unlikely be used for picture or video editing. Dell Vostro 1015 Battery

The ultrabook has a bit of a hard time in outdoor use. In addition to the low contrast and brightness, the screen's glossy surface affects the contents' legibility. It is first possible to recognize something to some extent in the shade. Dell Vostro A840 Battery

Sony's ultrabook behaves like most other screens on the market in terms of viewing angles. The display is good as long as you look at the screen as level as possible. Then it is even possible to swerve to the right or left without major content distortions. This enables sitting in front of the screen with several viewers. The content quickly starts to invert or fade when looking from above or below. Dell Vostro A860 Battery

Our Sony ultrabook test sample is equipped with a current Intel Core i3-2367M CPU with 1.4 GHz. It is supported by a 4 GB working memory and a 500 GB hard disk. The processor integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 chip takes care of video output. In addition to the 500 GB hard disk, the ultrabook has a 32 GB SSD memory (mini PCIe). However, the user cannot access it directly. It is managed automatically by the system. The SSD is clearly noticed during system booting or opening programs: it is extremely fast. This is also Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES main use - namely as a small, quickly available portable companion. Dell Vostro A860n Battery

Intel's Core i3-2367M processor is installed in Sony's ultrabook. It is a so-called ULV (ultra low voltage) model with an exceptionally low consumption. However, that also affects performance. Both cores are not clocked particularly high with 1.4 GHz. Turbo Boost 2.0 is also not a feature of the ULV processor and thus it is not automatically overclocked during use. Nevertheless, multi-threading is possible and so it can process four threads simultaneously. Intel's HD Graphics 3000 is also integrated in the processor. Due to this limitation, the i3-2367M only has a TDP of 17 watts. "Normal" i3 processors are specified with a TDP of 35 watts. Dell XPS M2010 Battery

So far, we have not had many 13.3 inch subnotebooks or ultrabooks in review. Comparisons with Sony's Vaio ultrabook are thus limited. Merely Toshiba's Portégé Z830-10N (2367M, HD 3000) features the same processor. Sony's Vaio ultrabook scores a bit better than Toshiba's Portégé in Cinebench R10's single rendering (64bit), so the test of only one core. Sony's Vaio accomplishes 2275.0 points while Toshiba's Portégé lags a bit behind with 2233.0 points. Dell Latitude D420 Battery

In Cinebench R10 multi rendering (64bit), Sony's Vaio again lies in front of Toshiba's Portégé Z830-10N. The difference between both notebooks is very marginal. Sony's ultrabook leads with 5048.0 points to 4821.0 points for Toshiba's laptop. However, Sony's Vaio ultrabook is defeated when compared with the MacBook Air 13 inch 2011 (2557M, HD 3000) and 8266.0 points. But Sony's Vaio sooner belongs to the slower models when compared with other ultrabooks (comparison: Asus Zenbook UX31E-DH52B (2557M, HD 3000) 8349.0 points). Here it becomes evident that other ultrabooks are equipped with stronger processors. Dell Latitude D430 Battery

We used the PCMark 7 benchmark to assess Vaio ultrabook's system performance. Here, the ultrabook achieved 2371.0 points and places itself roughly in the midfield of similar notebooks. Toshiba's Portégé Z830-10N (2367M, HD 3000) scored slightly better with 2371.0 points and the MacBook Air 13 inch 2011 (2557M, HD 3000) is also clearly in the lead with 3561.0 points. These figures are however unimportant for everyday use. Sony's Vaio proves to be a solid work device for this field. Opening programs especially benefits from the 32 GB SSD drive. Dell Inspiron 9100 Battery

No less than two hard disks work in Sony's Vaio ultrabook. The first is a 2.5 inch, 500 GB (gross) magnet disk. It spins with 5400 rpm. The second is a 32 GB SSD drive that the user cannot access directly. The system manages the 32 GBs automatically so to speed up specific processes (e.g. booting the laptop). Dell Inspiron XPS Battery

Although HDTune registered both hard disks, the SSD drive is incorrectly readout with 12 GB. The hybrid drive is only difficult to compare because of this "blend".

The processor integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 is used as the graphics card in Sony's Vaio ultrabook. Like the ULV processor, the graphics card's performance is reduced compared with "standard" models (350 versus 650 MHz base clock). But the consumption benefits from that as we remarked under Processor. In terms of performance, the graphics card is not designed for up-to-date games and is therefore sooner conceived for office tasks or Internet surfing. Nevertheless, a few older games should run on this graphics card. DELL Studio 1450 Battery

Intel's HD Graphics 3000 is an old acquaintance in our test lab and, as expected, does not break any records. On the contrary, Sony's Vaio ultrabook is sooner found at the lower end due to the ULV processor's slimmed performance. Sony's ultrabook only managed 1698.0 points in the 3DMark 06 benchmark. Again, Toshiba's Portégé Z830-10N (2367M, HD 3000) has a slight lead on the Sony with 1726.0 points. DELL Studio 1450n Battery

Sony's ultrabook is not made for gaming. That is not surprising in view of the notebook's ULV processor and basic on board graphics. We tested three current tracks on the notebook. Alan Wake and the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim were absolutely unplayable. It looks similar with Anno 2070. The game can still be played in the lowest setting with a lot of patience, but it is not really fun. DELL Studio 1450R Battery

Akku Acer AO532h-2825

Right out of the box, the small ProBook impresses us with its high quality look. The case is made of a sand-blasted aluminium surface (dark gray/anthracite) and has a nice shimmer in the light. A nice pro is that the surface of the case is matt. The thick base unit reminds us of the 15" and 17" ProBooks. The 13 inch 6360b weighs 2.1 kg and we held it with one hand to test its feel. At first it seemed a bit heavy for its size but compared to similarly built competitors, the 6360b lies comfortably in the hand. It was clear from this test that the 6360b was built on a torsion-resistant base. The case did not give way to pressure anywhere. The maintenance flap on the bottom of the laptop makes creaking noises when touched (for example, when we lifted the laptop). Dell Vostro 1500 Battery

Of course, the ProBook was never meant to be as slim or light as an Ultrabook. Instead, this laptop has been designed to house a wide variety of hardware components and ports securely.

The ProBook B-series is designed to accommodate the needs of business users and the 6360b fulfills its purpose magnificently. The test model offers a variety of useful ports: for example, the laptop holds a total of four USB 2.0 interfaces (one of which is a combo USB/eSATA interface). This helps reduce the disappointment of the missing USB-3.0 interface. Dell Vostro 1700 Battery

HP has provided the notebook with new and old interfaces so as to make the laptop compatible with as many devices as possible. This means that the laptop has both an analogue VGA interface as well as a future-oriented digital Displayport (both on the right side) for video output. These two interfaces allow users to connect both beamers and monitors (old and new) to the laptop. The only missing interface is HDMI, but as this port is usually needed for home entertainment systems, we believe that business users can live without it. Dell Inspiron 2100 Battery

On the right side, the notebook also has a microphone jack, a headphone jack and a Firewire interface (IEEE 1394a). On the left side, an ExpressCard-/54 slot, a DVD+/RW multi-format burner and a Kensington lock can be found. The bottom of the device has a docking port interface which can be used to connect to a docking station. A docking station improves stationary use of the laptop by adding a multitude of interfaces. Dell Inspiron 2000 Battery

The user can use either the standard RJ-45 (Intel Gigabit LAN) interface or the WLAN module (Broadcom 4313 802.11 b/g/n) to connect to home and office networks. Thanks to the in-built HP HSPA+ modem, the user can place a SIM card in the laptop (under the maintenance flap) and access the mobile broadband network. We really like the rare 56K-/telephone modem of the laptop, as this will ensure that the user can connect to the Internet even in countries with poor infrastructure. The laptop has Bluetooth 2.1, which means that headsets and smartphones can be connected to the PC without the need for wires. Every possible communication module has been built into this subnotebook - just great! Dell Inspiron 2800 Battery

Security

HP has equipped the 6360b with a "Kensington Lock" to protect the notebook from thieves. The fingerprint reader (planted in the right hand-rest) can be used to secure the laptop from unauthorized access. HP has also installed a TPM module in this notebook. In addition, the 6360b has "Enhanced Pre-Boot Security", which, in essence, is a Supervisor/BIOS password. This feature prevents unauthorized users from starting the OS on the laptop as it demands a password at the boot screen. HP has also provided a tool for the encoding of sensitive data. Dell Latitude LS Battery

Accessories

The laptop is delivered with a quick start guide, the obligatory warranty papers and the small power adapter (weight: 410 g). As the 6360b is aimed at business users, buyers can add optional accessories from the HP store to their purchase. For example, docking stations (which range in price) can be bought for 150 US-$ (HP 90 W docking station) to 220 US-$ (HP 230 W docking station). These docking stations offer up to 6 additional USB ports, video output for up to three monitors and all the old interfaces not found nowadays on notebooks (a parallel port, a serial interface, PS2 mouse and keyboard, etc.). Dell Latitude L400 Battery
Need more battery life? The HP store offers 9-cell batteries with a capacity of 100 Wh. This 9-cell battery offers double the battery life for roughly 170 US-$. Of course, the user can also buy another standard battery (our model) as backup for around 90 US-$. Another great option is the flat docking port battery with a capacity of 100 Wh and a price tag of 160 US-$. When this docking port battery is used along with the 9-cell battery, run times up to 24 hours are possible (according to HP). Dell Inspiron 2600 Battery

Maintenance

HP has installed a big maintenance flap, which spans the bottom of the notebook. This flap allows users to quickly access the RAM and hard disk installed within the device. The SIM card slot is under this flap, and installing a SIM card will allow the user to surf with HSPA+ modem in a mobile network. The cooler fan and the cooling elements are also accessible. Maintenance of the ProBook 6360b is really easy, and the user will not even need a screwdriver to open the flap. Dell Inspiron 2650 Battery

The laptop has a 12 month default warranty, which can be extended up to 5 years on-site service. If the user wishes to purchase the 3 year "Pickup & Return" service (which covers accidental damage), s/he will have to pay a premium of 229 Euros. Dell XPS M1330 Battery

The smooth, extra-large chrome-lined touchpad (10cmx6.9cm) makes the notebook a breeze to use and is one of the most responsive touchpads found on an ultrathin. Both single- and multi-touch actions work extremely well with minimal misreads partly due to the ample space. The Elan software detects up to four fingers and each gesture is user-customizable. Dell Latitude D505 Battery

Similar to all Ultrabooks released thus far, left clicks and right clicks have been integrated into the touchpad itself. Most of the available surface area, however, registers a left click while a comparatively smaller portion of the bottom right corner is reserved for right clicks. Such a disparity seems logical as left clicks are much more common during everyday use. Overall, we found that the touchpad provides a frustration-free experience with adequate depth and excellent tactile feedback. Dell Latitude D600 Battery

The 13.3-inch antiglare matte display provides a native resolution of 1600x900 pixels, much higher than the 1366x768 pixel resolution more commonly found in competing Ultrabooks and budget 15.6-inch notebooks. In addition, the 900X3B uses a PLS (Plane-to-Line Switching) panel, which is Samsung’s own internally developed display technology with advantages similar to that of an IPS display. To the end-user, this means a screen that should provide more accurate colors, wider viewing angles and deeper contrasts than notebooks out there with standard TN panels. Subjectively, we were impressed by the super sharp text and images. Colors, however, don’t seem to pop as much as they do on the extra-glossy IPS display of the 2012 Envy 15. Dell Latitude D510 Battery

Samsung proudly advertises the SuperBright Plus display with a backlight capable of producing 400 nits of illumination, something that we can confirm in our tests. With the Gossen Mavo-Monitor, we recorded peak brightness of 508 nits on the top center quadrant of the screen with an overall average of about 430 nits throughout all nine quadrants. This is about twice as bright as most mainstream notebooks and handily outperforms other ultrathins like the Aspire S3, XPS 13 and 2011 MacBook Air 13, although the Asus UX31 can be marginally brighter than the Samsung in review. Brightness distribution could still be improved, but with a screen this bright and a contrast ratio this high, it is only a small and forgivable shortcoming. Dell Latitude D520 Battery

With the XRite i1, we recorded a total gamut volume of about 63 percent of the sRGB standard. This is a bit lower than what we were expecting as most typical TN panels found in midrange or budget notebooks hover around the low 60 percent mark, too. Regardless, color reproduction is about equal with other Ultrabooks and should be satisfactory for all users save for professional graphic artists demanding workstation-level color accuracy. Dell Latitude D530 Battery

Outdoor usability is excellent and is where the PLS panel can really strut its advantages. The matte display and ultra-bright LED backlight both make tasks under direct sunlight possible. Furthermore, since maximum brightness does not drop when disconnected from an AC power source, users can be sure that they can get the full 400+ nits of lighting when on the move. Combined with the thin-and-light profile and large touchpad, we found the 900X3B to be one of the best ultrathins for general outdoor use, a category that couldn’t be more important for Ultrabooks. Dell Latitude D610 Battery

Viewing angles are consistent and stable and is similar to that of other IPS displays. Colors do not shift at all with the PLS display, even if viewing from very wide viewing angles below the normal. Subjectively, we can see small decreases in apparent brightness if the user is very off angled, although this is not a significant issue. It’s uncommon to find an ultrathin notebook that can both be used outdoors and have outstanding viewing angles for sharing with adjacent viewers or friends, but the 900X3B hits the spot. Typical TN panels do not hold a candle to this Samsung display and users who have never owned a non-TN notebook may be pleasantly surprised at the freedom of viewing angles offered by an IPS or PLS panel. Dell Precision M20 Battery

A 1.6GHz Core i5-2467M powers the Samsung under review and includes both Hyper Threading and Turbo Boost as do all mobile Core i5 and Core i7 Sandy Bridge units. The low 17 Watt TDP, which is half of the TDP of standard voltage Core i5-2xxxM CPUs, makes the ULV Core i5 perfect for the thin Series 9 form factor, but also means that the system will run at reduced base frequencies in comparison. More information on the i5-2467M and its general benchmarks performance can be found here on its dedicated page. Dell Inspiron 6000 Battery

The integrated Intel HD 3000 should be of no surprise to most users by now. Since it is paired with an ULV CPU in the 900X3B, the GPU is clocked lower when both idle (350MHz) and under stress (1150MHz maximum with Turbo Boost). Notebooks with standard voltage Core i5 CPUs, such as the 14-inch HP dm4-3090se, can have their HD 3000 GPUs clocked faster at 650MHz and 1300MHz when idle and under stress, respectively. More information of the HD 3000 and its general performance can be found here on its dedicated page. Dell Inspiron 9200 Battery

For RAM, the Samsung unit is equipped with 1x 4GB DDR3 RAM operating at 667MHz. The RAM module is soldered onto the motherboard and is thus not expandable, similar to its predecessor.

On its right, there is a slider with the options "STAMINA" and "SPEED" for choosing the graphics card - so either processor graphics or dedicated card. We believe it is a very convenient function. Nevertheless, automatic switching via Optimus in current nVidia models is superior because the screen flickers for a moment with Sony's solution. The keyboard's LED light is also very handy as it enables hitting the right keys even in the dark. Additionally, the mixture of white LEDs and the midnight black notebook is an eye-catcher. Asus A8F Battery

The black touchpad is quite large at about 95 x 55 millimeters. The surface of the touchpad supports multi-touch use and allows precise gesture control with clear borders. Both click keys can only be accurately used in the outer areas. The key drop decreases toward the center and the feedback cam become unclear. After routine use, however, this is a non-issue for the user. Asus A8Fm Battery

Sony's Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B continues the case's high-end impression with the screen. Its diagonal of 15.5 inches makes it suitable as a multimedia machine and also looks good in business environments - particularly when considering the moderate weight. The native Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels virtually calls for multimedia use such as BluRay playback. Asus A8H Battery

Almost shunned in the multimedia category: the non-glare screen. It might not reproduce colors as brilliant as its glossy counterparts, but the latter often exaggerates colors to undesirable levels. We also appreciate a matte screen all the more in a device with such a vast application field. Asus A8He Battery

Our lab measurements also confirm good screen rates. The average brightness is 238 cd/m2 and should be enough for even brighter surroundings under mellow sunlight, for example on the terrace. The homogeneous illumination of 87% also pleases us. It only decreases strongly in the lower left corner, although this will only be noticeable by the most perceptive of users. The black value of 0.41 cd/m2 is agreeably low and leads to a high contrast of 622:1. Asus A8J Battery

Sony's Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B reproduces colors and gray shades quite well. The colors look quite natural and do not have an overlying color. The black value is very good and results in a saturated reproduction of dark movie scenes or picture areas. The high contrast contributes to this effect. Asus A8Ja Battery

But we also have to criticize the Vaio's screen a bit. The sRGB color spectrum's coverage of nearly 80% is still satisfactory, but the screen wastes a lot of its potential since a large part of its color space goes beyond the limits of the sRGB standard. This is particularly evident in the yellow range. We used Acer's TravelMate 5760G-2454G50Mnsk for comparison. The Acer plays in another league with an sRGB coverage of 88 percent. Asus A8Jc Battery

Two things speak for the Sony Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B's mobile outdoor use. The low weight in relation to screen size and the non-glare screen. Although it does not achieve an extremely high brightness and you should avoid direct sunlight when possible, Sony's Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B copes well in all other cases. Moreover, since the maximum brightness is maintained on battery power, the adapter can be left at home or in the case. Asus A8Je Battery

The screen's virtually flawless presentation finds its pinnacle in excellent viewing angle stability. The IPS screen built into Sony's Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B does not show any weaknesses on either the horizontal or vertical plane. On the contrary: The colors remain stable to the largest extent even in extreme angles. Merely the contrast and the brightness weaken a bit. The bottom line is that this model provides first rate display performance. Even several viewers will have a perfect view of the displayed content from this screen. Asus A8Jm Battery

Sony's Vaio VPC-SE2M9E/B is powered by a dual-core CPU that is still nased on the Sandy bridge architecture. Nonetheless, the Core i7-2640M is extremely fast and was actually one of the fastest dual-core notebook CPUs until the end of 2011. It has a base clock of 2.8GHz and, assuming favorable thermal conditions, the CPU can achieve speeds of up to 3.5GHz on one core and 3.3GHz on both cores via Turbo Boost. The level 3 cache of 4MB is also quite high. Asus A8Jn Battery

Akku ASUS Eee PC 1008h

The manufacturer specifies that the panel has a maximum brightness of 220 cd/m² and a contrast ratio of 300:1 - standard values. These values are an understatement; the display has a maximum brightness of 246 cd/m² and an average display brightness of 229 cd/m². Fujitsu has downplayed the contrast even more than the brightness. The display has a good contrast ratio of 587:1, which is almost double that of the specified value. This high contrast is the result of the low black value of 0.39 cd/m². Furthermore, the display has a balanced distribution of brightness and homogeneous illumination. Asus K43F Battery

The black displayed on the Fujitsu Lifebook E781 is better than average, while cheaper laptops have a disappointing greyish black. Looking at pictures with dark areas or watching a film with dark sequences is a true pleasure on the E781. The notebook may have average coverage of the sRGB color space, but this does not affect the overall use much as the system is not intended for professional graphics editors. Asus K43J Battery

The very good display of the Lifebook E781 is suitable for outdoor use. The content may become unclear when the display is under direct sunlight, but the user can easily work on the laptop if under shade. The great opening angle of the notebook is especially useful when under these circumstances. Asus K43JC Battery

It's common to have more than one person at a time staring at the screen of a business laptop. Here, displays with poor viewing angle stability are a bad choice. The Fujitsu Lifebook E781 is a different story. The horizontal viewing angle is stable on a very wide angle and the contrast drops only slightly. Vertically, the display darkens quickly when pushed backward. On the other hand, when pushed downwards, the display gets brighter. Overall, we see the viewing angles of the TN panel of the E781 as one of its strengths. Asus K43JM Battery

Fujitsu offers 8 different CPUs for the Lifebook E781 from the Intel Core i series. These processors are all dual-core CPUs. Our test model is in the lower third of the E781 series as it is equipped with a standard Intel Core i5-2430M. The dual-core CPU runs at 2.4 GHz and represents the middle-class of mobile processors from Intel. Turbo Boost allows both cores to speed up to 2.7 GHz and a single core can be overclocked to 3.0 GHz. Asus K43JS Battery

In our test model, we have 4 GB DDR3-1333 RAM and the model supports a maximum 8 GB. The test model has a single 4 GB module installed which makes upgrading easy.

The Intel Core i5-2430M provides no surprises - positive or negative. The performance of the Fujitsu Lifebook E781 is exactly at the level expected and is close to other laptops with similar specifications. The results may not be stunning, but this was clear from the specifications. Asus K43JY Battery

The Turbo Boost function works flawlessly and delivers full performance. Even after multiple hours of stress testing, the cores did not throttle down. Another worthy note is that the full performance is possible even while running on battery. Asus K43S Battery

The system performance of the Fujitsu Lifebook E781 notebook is average as expected of the middle-class internal hardware. Windows gives the laptop a low performance index of 4.7 points due to the graphics card, but the laptop can still hold its own compared the competition. In fact, it can even compete with laptops with stronger processors as the system performance is not determined by the CPU alone. Asus K43SC Battery

The buyer has a variety of options for the storage device. Fujitsu offers SSDs with 128 GB capacity to 5400 rpm HDDs with a capacity up to 320 GB. Our test model uses a 7200 rpm 500GB Toshiba HDD with a SATA II interface (3 GB/s). This storage device is a good choice for a business laptop. Unfortunately, the drive constantly emitted a low whirring noise. At load, it even emitted a high-pitched whining – uncomfortable to say the least. Asus K43SD Battery

The shock sensor works very well. In our test, we received notifications that the read heads of the drive were locked due to shaking. This is an especially useful feature while the notebook is on-the-move.

The performance of the Toshiba drive is similar to the competition. It is fast enough for a business notebook, but the Toshiba HDD cannot compete with truly fast drives as it has a maximum transfer rate of 100 MB/s. SSDs are in a different category. If the user needs faster performance, s/he can always add an SSD in the modular slot. Asus K43SE Battery

ASUS N55S Battery

Asus A43JF Battery

Laptop Battery ,Laptop AC Adapter

Brightness distribution could still be improved, but with a screen this bright and a contrast ratio this high, it is only a small and forgivable shortcoming. acer Battery ,acer AC Adapter

Asus A43JG Battery

Asus A43JH Battery

Asus A43JN Battery

Asus A43JP Battery

Asus A43JQ Battery

For RAM, the Samsung unit is equipped with 1x 4GB DDR3 RAM operating at 667MHz. The RAM module is soldered onto the motherboard and is thus not expandable, similar to its predecessor.

DPC Latency Checker recorded recurring high peaks even with WLAN inactive. Disabling unneeded controllers or bloatware will likely address any system latency concerns. Asus A43JR Battery

In the synthetic CPU-oriented benchmarks, the i5-2467M is only marginally faster than the i5-2537M of the 900X1B, sometimes by only a couple of seconds depending on the program. This is perhaps unsurprising as the only significant difference between the two CPUs here is the 200MHz dissimilarity in base speeds. As a result, it’d be hard press for users to notice any real-world performance gains from an i5-2537M to an i5-2467M. Asus A43JU Battery

Other ultrathins like as the Folio 13, Portege Z830 and Aspire S3 are all shipping with the same CPU as the 900X3B and should offer similar CPU performance results in both single-thread (SuperPi) and multi-thread (wPrime) benchmarks. The i5-2557M in the Asus UX31 is a notable step above these Ultrabooks, however, and its raw CPU scores in CineBench R10/11.5, SuperPi and wPrime are all proof of that. Still, the i5-2467M is handily beaten by even the very common standard voltage i5-2410M due to the raw horsepower of the latter. This is where the speedy SSDs in most Ultrabooks kick in and somewhat balance out the overall system performance differences. Asus A43JV Battery
