Further information about Intel's HD Graphics 3000 in other games can be read in our extensive graphics comparison. Fujitsu FMV-E8200 Battery
There is no reason for concern when it comes to Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES's temperatures. The ultrabook only heats up to a maximum of 35.1 on the top and 36.7 degrees Celsius on the bottom in load situations. Those are very good rates. Fujitsu FMV-E8210 Battery Sony could even consider throttling the fan speed a bit so to reduce the noise level slightly. The top's maximum temperature is 30.3 degrees Celsius and we measure 31.4 degrees Celsius on the bottom when the device is idling. So we can safely say that the ultrabook can be used without hesitation on the lap at all times. Particularly since an ultrabook will only rarely be used on the lap during full load.
However, we again point out that our test sample is a pre-series device. Consequently, the rates can look different in the retail version. Fujitsu FMV-E8300 Battery
We used the programs Prime95 and FurMark to put Sony's Vaio under the maximum possible load. Here, both the CPU and GPU are stressed extremely. We immediately noticed that the cooling system is at full power directly after starting the stress test. If we believe the data recorded using PC Wizard, the temperatures are not particularly high. We measured less than 50 degrees Celsius. The cooling system could have slowed down a notch or two. We also refer to the notebook's pre-series status here. Fujitsu FMV-E8310 Battery The cooling system's behavior may be revised in the retail version. The processor ran at maximum clock during the entire stress test. ULV processors do not incorporate Turbo Boost. We did not record throttling or similar problems and the subsequent 3DMark 06 benchmark did not show any big differences compared with the "cold" state with 3085.0 points.
The speakers are, notebook-typically, modest. They lack deep pitches and basses. The trebles start to fray in high volumes. However, the sound quality is acceptable for a movie on the go. The audio jack supplies a higher quality. Fujitsu LifeBook C1211 Battery
The ultrabook proves to be quite energy-efficient thanks to state-of-the-art energy saving technologies and hardware. It also has to be in order to achieve the run times Sony specifies. The idle consumption is 6.1 - 8.7 watts. When compared with other ultrabooks, the Sony fares quite well here. Apple's MacBook Air 13 (2557M, HD 3000) for example needs 6.0 - 14.0 watts. Sony's Vaio also does a fairly good job in load with 27.0 - 31.9 watts. Fujitsu LifeBook C1211D Battery
Sony's Vaio can excel again in battery life. We use BatteryEater Pro's software to determine the run times. The Reader's test simulates office use with reduced screen brightness and disabled wifi/Bluetooth. The ultrabook even manages more than the manufacturer's specified 7 hours and achieves a total of 8 hours and 26 minutes. The runtime sinks to 4 hours and 16 minutes when surfing on the Internet. 2 hours and 30 minutes are left when the ultrabook is used on the go with maximum brightness and full load. Fujitsu LifeBook C1212 Battery
Before we go on with our verdict, we again point out that the reviewed Sony Vaio SVT1311M1ES is a pre-series model. We are basically very satisfied with Sony's ultrabook as it is already.
The workmanship is very good. However, there was a minor deduction for the quite instable display; it can be twisted without much force. Since Apple and Asus prove that superior stability is possible, we deducted a few percentage points here. Fujitsu LifeBook C1212D Battery
After a bit of getting used to the keyboard, we also were very satis fied with it. The touchpad would have achieved an equally good rating if it were not for the sporadic dropouts. But we ascribe this to the pre-series status and presume that it will not occur in the final version. Fujitsu LifeBook E8010 Battery
In terms of connectivity, the notebook scores particularly due to available USB 3.0 as well as VGA and HDMI. Most other notebooks cannot keep up with that. However, the other notebooks break away in terms of performance since they usually feature stronger processors. In return, the good battery life makes up for that. Fujitsu LifeBook E8010D Battery
Overall, we can recommend Sony's Vaio SVT1311M1ES ultrabook without hesitation. Especially those looking for an enduring and well-built ultrabook for small money are well advised with Sony's laptop.
Acer promises timeless elegance and extraordinary computing power with its new Aspire V3 range. On Acer's product page, phrases like "use several applications at the same time", "search the Internet" and "playing computer games" are used in the same breath. Well, if that is not a masterpiece of engineering … Fujitsu LifeBook E8020 Battery
Now seriously, Acer aims the V3 at customers focused on performance and hesitantly tries to even bring its mobile products closer to the gaming enthusiastic audience. Until now, Acer does not have any full-blown gaming machines in its range. Thus, the V3 range will be a member of Acer's premium performance range. Fujitsu LifeBook E8020D Battery
Acer built to 15 inch models in the Ethos range (Aspire 5951G) and one 18 inch behemoth (Aspire 8951G) in the past. Consequently, a direct precursor can't really be determined for the present V3-771G featuring a 17.3 inch screen. It would soonest be the multimedia notebook Aspire 7750G, equipped with AMD's potent 6850G graphics. Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi2530 Battery
What does the Aspire V3-771G have inside? Well, as the known "G" in the model number already hints, a good portion of graphics power. In detail, Nvidia's GeForce GT 650M GPU works inside the notebook. It is a chip based on Nvidia's brand new Kepler architecture (28 nm), which is positioned in the upper midrange. Its performance can be compared with the older GTX 460M or GTX 560M. Amazingly enough they were members of the gaming upper range not even a year ago. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi2550 Battery
The GPU is backed by a processor from the also just released Intel Ivy Bridge generation. The i7-3610QM chip is virtually the gateway into the world of current mobile quad-core CPUs. Since the 17 inch case has enough room inside, Acer installs two 2.5 inch drive slots which are occupied by a 120 GB SSD as the system data carrier and a 1 TB data HDD in our test configuration. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi3540 Battery
Piano paint is retro – This first painful observation unfortunately characterizes the new Aspire V3's entire show. Display lid, screen bezel and the wrist rest gleam at the user – at least, for a while after the precious piece has left its packaging. It only takes a few hours of use until fingerprints and innumerous first-rate dust particles are visibly gathered. The surface's not very convincing sticky feel is also a known drawback. In the last few months it almost seemed that this kind of surface paint was finally going out of fashion – had Acer not taken its best shot at artfully disguising cheap plastic with painted surfaces just before the final farewell. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi2530 Battery
At least the looks are very nice in a polished state. The silver keyboard bezel peps up the otherwise completely black device. If it weren't for the lid's and wrist rest's glossy surfaces, the term "conservative" could apply to the device. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi2450 Battery
The plastic case's stability remains beyond reproach. No creaking noises or wobbly components are noticed when handling the device. The big 17 inch screen could be a bit more rigid. However that can be forgiven in view of the restricted portability. We find it much more annoying that the premium feel doesn't come up during use. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi2550 Battery
A look at the street prices explains the choice of the case. The Aspire V3 starts at incredible EUR 595. However, this version is still equipped with a Sandy Bridge CPU and GT 640M graphics. Nevertheless, there isn't much room for a higher quality case in view of this competitive price.
In our opinion, Acer's port solution is not satisfactory either. This does not apply as much to the scope of interfaces as to their distribution. All ports are located on the left and right side edges at the far front. This may be beneficial for accessing and locating the ports, but is less optimal for keeping the work area beside the notebook clear of obstructive and unsightly cables. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi2428 Battery
The variety and number of ports are alright but won't let anyone jump for joy. We find VGA, HDMI, LAN, 2x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0 as well as a headphone and microphone jack. The home user will be sufficiently equipped but an enthusiast will certainly find reason for complaint.
You get a lot of preinstalled software when you buy the notebook although it is actually unwanted – so-called bloatware. Some manufacturers please the buyer with an agreeably clean system and others clearly exaggerate by installing heaps of programs. Acer belongs to the latter even if it is not inevitably a direct disadvantage for the Aspire V3-771G. The solid state drive ensures that the system is swift right from the initial start. The notebook is booted and Windows is ready to go after mere 10 – 15 seconds. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi2528 Battery
However, you should consider that the system's SSD only has a capacity of 120 GB. The user only has approx. 100 GB available and around 70 GB of that is reserved by preinstalled software and system files. Therefore it is advisable to use the SSD primarily for frequently used software. Other data, such as music, videos and games, should sooner be stored on the 1000 GB data hard disk. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi2550 Battery
Maintenance
The user can access both hard disk slots, all four RAM banks, the wifi module and a free mSATA slot via a fairly large cover on the device's bottom. However, the CPU and GPU as well as the entire cooling system are not accessible. You risk voiding the warranty if you open the device beyond that. FUJITSU LifeBook T580 Tablet PC Battery
Warranty
The warranty specifications found in various shops cause confusion. Upon inquiry, Acer states a warranty period of 2 years (24 months) for all V3-771G configurations, including pick-up & return service. One year is an International Travelers Warranty. FUJITSU LifeBook T580 Battery
A chiclet-style keyboard is almost always used when looks matter – the present Acer Aspire V3 is no exception. However, that does not mean that it is not possible to type on such a pretty keyboard. We find a key size of 15 x 15 millimeters with a key gap of approximately 4 millimeters in the case of the Aspire V3. The function and arrow keys step out of line as they are smaller. In return, the user can take delight in a dedicated number pad. Additional keys are not used in favor of a plain design. The familiar functions, such as volume control, are managed via FN combinations. fujitsu fmv-biblo loox m-d10 Battery
The input does not give reason for complaint. Deviations are only seen on the ">/<" and "#/'" keys, which are placed directly beside their neighboring key (it is the two-rowed enter key in the latter case). Nevertheless, that should not lead to difficulties when typing after a bit of practice.
What is the typing feel like? Basically, all keys feature a clear pressure point with a medium key drop. The noise level is quiet up to very audible depending on the stroke. So if you belong to the more energetic typists, you can "enjoy" varying noises according to the area where you hit the key. fujitsu fmv-biblo loox m-d15 Battery
The installed multi-touchpad is slightly lowered in the case and can easily be located without looking. Its surface is made of the same material as the surroundings. However, it is slightly roughened which greatly contributes to the gliding characteristics. fujitsu lifebook m2010 Battery
We had a few, minor problems particularly in the first few minutes of familiarization: Tap-to-click was often not accepted and our fingers frequently strayed into the scroll field at the right edge. Alps' extensive configuration menu however allows many settings for customizing the touchpad to suit personal needs. After disabling the vertical scroll bar, two-finger based scrolling worked much better. fujitsu lifebook m2011 Battery
We would have definitely expected a Full HD screen in a strong 17 inch multimedia notebook or desktop replacement, especially in the full configuration we tested. This is unfortunately not the case. Acer completely relies on a HD+ screen with a maximum resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels. This is absolutely alright in terms of desktop overview for normal users, but the choice is disappointing in view of the BluRay option that could feed the screen with native 1080p content. Several competitors consistently use Full HD screens in the same price range. Examples would be Asus' N75SF or the upcoming Asus N76 just like the members of HP's Pavilion dv7 range. Fujitsu Stylistic LT C500 Battery
The aggressive pricing policy is ultimately also noticed in the installed screen's rates. The AUO139E screen has a maximum brightness of 230 cd/m2 in our measurements. That drops to an average of 213 cd/m2. Together with a comparatively high black value of 1.26 cd/m2, the maximum possible contrast of 171:1 is not exactly exemplary. Fujitsu Stylistic LT P600 Battery
Okay for the low-end price range of far below EUR 1000 also applies to the image quality. However, the big-spender should be able to expect a bit more in the configurations beyond this threshold. Then, not only more should be included in terms of gigabytes and MHz, but the screen could also be more attractive. Fujitsu Stylistic LT C-500 Battery
